SHOPPERS at a Barry supermarket have made it a bumper year for a Barry-based charity striving to bring a cancer treatment to Wales.

Customers and staff at Sainsbury’s Local, on Park Crescent, in Barry have pledged donations, taken part in raffles, and walked away with carriers bags – helping to raise £604.70 – to present Karen’s Cause with a grand total of £2170.48 for the year June 2013 to June 2014.

Mum-of-two Karen Holroyd originally started her own fundraising campaign to pay for her own cancer treatment which was only available in England.

Karen discovered a machine in the form of the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System - a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumours.

Her treatment which she eventually received in England, is not available in Wales so she set up the charity with the aim of trying to help bring the treatment here for patients.

Karen said: “I would like to thank all the staff for the events they have organised and the customers. It’s lovely they all decided to help.”

International drag artist, Leslie Lush is now set to boost funds further by starring in a Ladies Night at the Market Street club, Market Street, Barry on Saturday, August 2 with a family fun day scheduled for Penarth Athletic Club, from midday on Sunday, August 10.
