PUPILS from Barry’s Bryn Hafren Comprehensive school in Barry tried their hand at horseriding when they joined thousands of learners at SkillsCymru in Cardiff.

The pupils attended the Motorpoint Arena event, along with 5,000 other pupils from 64 schools across South Wales, to get a taste of the variety of career opportunities available to them across the country.

From mixing a ‘mocktail’ to acting out an RAF mission, learners were given the chance to ‘have a go’ with a variety of employers and speak to real people working in every industry from manufacturing to medicine, teaching to tourism and catering to caring.

Bryn Hafren Comprehensive pupil, Peyton Bradshaw,14, said the day had been fantastic.

She said: “I’ve learned so many interesting things, from how the RAF train their pilots to fly a plane and how the BBC create the special effects on Casualty to how ride a horse. Not to mention coming face to face with a Dalek and Cyberman! I’ve also learned about the process of getting our food from the field to our forks, how sausages are seasoned, sized and snipped and how to make the perfect canapé.

“The whole day has been a real eye-opener. I honestly didn’t realise just how many different kinds of jobs were out there and also how important it is to explore all of the options and consider things like apprenticeships. I’ve been able to talk to people already working in jobs across different sectors and find out more about what qualifications and skills I would need in order to pursue a career that interests me.”

“The day has been really helpful and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone struggling to decide what they want to do.”

SkillsCymru enabled pupils to explore the variety of options available to them when they leave school.

They also explored a variety of roles and sectors and were able to get ‘hands-on’ with the different exhibitors.

They also had the chance to speak to people who were working in the kinds of roles they might be interested in.

Representatives included the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Welsh Government Food and Drink, McDonalds, ESTnet, British Horseracing Authority, South Wales Fire and Rescue, Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, NHS, The Prince’s Trust and Visit Wales.

They challenged learners to a series of engaging and fun time-trials, taste-tests, cooking challenges and aptitude experiments.
