ROTARY’S district 1150 governor Mrs Sandra Townsend from Porthcawl was the special guest at the Rotary Club of Barry’s dinner meeting on Thursday, November 13 at the Glenbrook Inn, Barry.

Speaking to members after dinner, Sandra shared her views on Rotary, an international organisation and the biggest service organisation in the world, whose core values are ‘Service, Fellowship and Integrity.’

She went on to speak of the many projects Rotary are engaged in locally, nationally and internationally and how these projects give members an opportunity to make a difference and to change lives by helping those less fortunate than others.

She spoke of Paul Harris who, in 1905, founded the Rotary movement whose motto is “Service above Self,” encouraging all Rotarians to encourage new people, men and women, to join Rotary to continue the good work and enjoy the fellowship that is such an important part of membership.

Barry Rotary Club’s president Robin Pitcher warmly thanked district governor Sandra for a most interesting talk; part of a very busy autumn for the Barry Club. Earlier in the month they organised the 41st Annual Fireworks Fiesta on Barry Island soon after a successful International Lunch in October which was jointly organised with the Inner Wheel Club of Barry.

Plans are now well in hand to have stalls in High Street, Barry when the Christmas lights are switched on at the end of November and to have another stall at the Dickensian evening in Dinas Powys in December. Members will also be visiting Orchard House in December with Inner Wheel to hold a Christmas evening for the residents.

The Rotary Club of Barry also continues to support the Vale Food Bank with monthly donations of food and with the collecting of food at Tesco, Barry.

Members of the Rotary Club of Barry are part of an international organisation with one million members worldwide, forming a global network of business, professional and community volunteers.

The Rotary Club of Barry meets weekly in the Glenbrook Inn on Thursdays 6pm for 6.30pm. If you would like further information please contact Peter Battle on 01446 710204 or look online at www.ribi.org.
