Isle of Fire, in its second year, beat other small events across Wales to be placed in the top three in the National Tourism Awards for Wales.

Dinefwr Literature Festival and Welshpool Airshow & Transport Festival took home gold and silver respectively.

Isle of Fire was an opening event for the Barry Island Weekenders programme, organised by the Vale Council and Walk the Plank.

The event attracted 7,000 visitors in 2014 and its core objectives were to support the night time economy and to extend the tourism offer can be seen throughout the entertainment, from a lantern parade, flaming sculptures to fire shows and more.

The awards, run by Visit Wales in commercial partnership with Quadrant Media & Communications, recognise the best in Welsh tourism and includes categories such as Best Place to Stay, Best Place to Eat, Best Day Out, Best Event, Best Visitor Welcome, Tourism Skills Development, Best Business Tourism and the new Rising Star category, which recognises those who are up and coming in the industry.

Deputy minister for culture, sport and tourism, Ken Skates, said: “The National Tourism Awards are the Oscars of the tourism industry and pay tribute to those who are committed and passionate about their businesses, tourism and Wales. The quality of what we have to offer here in Wales goes from strength to strength and the Awards are an opportunity for us all to celebrate the industry and to showcase the outstanding quality of our vibrant tourism sector. I’d like to congratulate the winners and wish you the very best for a successful season ahead.”
