Sully U3A's history group at Raglan Castle
MEMBERS of Sully U3A's history group visited Raglan Castle recently, one of the late medieval Castles in Wales.
It was built originally by Sir William Ap Thomas, his son William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, turned it into one of the most impressive homes in Wales before being beheaded by the King Maker - the Earl of Warwick in 1469.
In the 16th century the castle was owned by the Somerset family, the Earls of Worcester, who transformed it into an Elizabethan house with one of the finest Renaissance gardens in the country.
Its days came to an end in the Civil War when it was besieged by the Parliamentary Army, led by its commander in chief Lord Fairfax. After its surrender in 1646 it became a ruin.
