“THANK you just does not seem enough.” That was the message from a Barry charity that won big in the Gannett Foundation’s Cash for Charities.

Baby Basics, on Barry’s Thompson Street, won more than £1,600 in the charity giveaway.

The Gannett Foundation selected several charities across South Wales that were put in the running to win a share of £16,000 and because of Barry and District News readers, Baby Basics won a welcoming Christmas bonus.

Centre manager for the Vale of Glamorgan Pauline Byrne said she was overwhelmed by the announcement.

“Everyone who has voted for us and supported us, thank you,” she said. “It just means that it makes the charity sustainable to keep providing all the items we need to fill baskets.”

Baby Basics provided baskets of everything expectant mother’s need as they prepare to give birth.

The charity is contacted by agencies in the area helping families that need extra support in bringing a child into the world.

Baby Basics then puts together a tailored hamper of toiletries, clothes, blankets and whatever the newborn baby needs to make their start in life as comfortable as possible.

Ms Byrne said the money was needed particularly for baby toiletries which are often in high demand.

“Thank you just does not seem enough,” she added. “In these difficult times fundraising for charities is not easy. The generosity of everybody is overwhelming and humbling.”

While at the store Barry and District News bumped into Natalie Chant, of Dinas Powys, who was donating a basket to be filled.

She said it was great there were places like Baby Basics to help those in need.

“It’s good that you can donate stuff to another good home and not have it go to waste,” said Ms Chant. “It is just such an expensive time for people now.”
