THE Dillwyn Thomas Tournament, a mixed doubles competition and a hugely popular club event was recently played at Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis Club.

Over the course of a month or so pairs played box matches with the aim of progressing through to the finals. The first division final was a junior versus seniors’ affair, contested by juniors, Libby Smith, (aged only 14) and Alex Vowles against their senior counterparts Tom Clack and Carol Sullivan. Both pairs having played and beaten some stiff opposition to reach the final.

A high tempo match ensued with powerful base line tennis accompanied with some stunning net play by both pairs. The pace of tennis being played at times was relentless, all four players contributing fully to a great spectacle.

The match, played in a great spirit and in front of a large crowd was won 6-3, 6-3 by the junior pair of Libby and Alex, a pair that is going from strength to strength.

The winners were presented with their trophies, as ever by Margaret Hayley in addition to the division two winners Kelvin Thomas and Emma Carter who played and won a tense, three set match against club chairman Marion Curtis and partner Harry Emery.

In rounding off the day it was fitting that the Dillwyn Thomas Plate for outstanding contribution as a junior covering many different aspects of life at the club both on and off court was presented to Alex Vowles in his last season as a junior. Alex is now captaining the Men’s firsts.
