MEN’S Division One

Tynewydd FC 3-1 Knap

Tynewydd FC got back to winning ways after their worst run of results ever after seeing their squad decimated with injuries since the beginning of the season, so finally getting a squad back together was good for team morale.

The win was sparked by the return of former player Ryan Butler, who had taken a sabbatical from football to set up his own successful business, Wheeliesmart. It didn't take him long to get back in the swing of things, his first touch actually. He was played in on the edge of the right side of the box and from a tight angle he smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.

The home side were playing some lovely two touch passing football and creating numerous chances that they really should have taken. It was late in the half when the Tynny finally doubled their lead after an excellent counter attack after a Knap freekick. The ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Spencer Bennett picked it up and drove into the opposition half, laid the ball to the right wing to Julian Brana who crossed first time to left winger Lloyd Union whose lovely knock down found Spencer who'd continued his run and swept the ball in to make it 2-0 at halftime.

Tynny started the second half much like the first creating lots of chances, with Butler, Lewis Union and Brana all coming close to killing the game off. But failing to do so gave the Knap confidence which led to the Tynny conceding a penalty midway through the half. It was duly converted by another former Tynny player and the Knap's best player on the day, centre half Nicky Elston.

The goal only gave the Tynny more determination to grab their third, which they did soon after, when some lovely play around the Knap box released Bennett who jinked past two defenders before freezing the keeper and slotting in his second of the day. The home side could and should have scored more as they were well worth the victory, but after such a barren run of results a great performance and three points were most needed. There was even time for birthday boy Steven "Stats" Eveleigh to make a cameo appearance late on upfront.

Man of the Match went to central midfielder Andrew Colburn who covered every blade of grass and set the tempo for the Tynny all day.

The whole squad would like to wish the best to coach Paul Union, who early Friday morning, while in the line of duty at work, suffered some serious neck damage after heroically putting his body in harm’s way to save someone else. Well Paul, those three points are for you.
