PRIMARY school children from the Vale of Glamorgan took part in a multi-sport festival at Barry Leisure Centre.

Over 100 children took part in sports like badminton, netball, table tennis and squash which was organised by the Council’s Active Young People team in conjunction with the national governing bodies of the featured sports.

Year Five and Six pupils from Cadoxton, High Street, Romilly and Wenvoe Primary Schools had the opportunity to experience all four sports after participating in a carousel of activities.

Ben Williams, Active Young People Co-ordinator, said: “I would like to thank all of the partners who contributed to a hugely successful event. It’s really important that young people are given the chance to try out different sports where they might not have had the opportunity before. The day was about encouraging the pupils to go along to their local club or facility once they’ve caught the bug for the sport.”

The event was supported by coaches and leaders from the individual sports, along with students from the University of South Wales who volunteer as part of their degree course.

Feedback from the schools and pupils was very positive with many asking where they could access the sport in their local communities immediately after the event. Schools were also encouraged to introduce some of the new activities into their own sports provision and would be supported to do so through resources, equipment and training.
