A NEWLY formed Barry tennis club has soared to the top of the rankings after proving a smash hit with a national scheme.

Barry Community Tennis Club, based at Romilly Park, In fact, has been judged the most successful in the UK with its Highland Spring National Mini Tennis Month Parent and Child sessions.

The accolade has now earned the club a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some of its coaches and young players.

As a reward for the success of these sessions, which brought parents and children on court together, having fun and learning skills and activities they could practice away from the courts, the Lawn Tennis Association has invited two of the club's coaches and eight of the mini tennis players to the forthcoming Queen's tournament, at which the world's elite players will compete in what is often referred to as a 'warm-up for Wimbledon'.

The children will have a two hour coaching session, and will be hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the world's best and maybe pick up a few tips on their tennis technique.

But it was business as usual with teams in action at the weekend for the Aegon Team Tennis Leagues, with home fixtures for 8&u boys and 12&u girls, and away fixtures for 8&u mixed and 14&u boys, as well as some extra on-court sessions as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend, with players of all ages given the opportunity to get on court for an informal knockabout with equipment provided and some informal coaching tips, plus fun and games for the kids on Sunday afternoon.
