THE community of Barry Island gathered together to celebrate the life of the much loved Mike Miles.

On Sunday, September 6, a charity football match was held at Maslin Park in memory of Mike and to remember the massive contribution he made to youth football on the Island from the late 1980s until mid 2000.

Mike was well liked and respected and after a long and brave battle with cancer he died in January.

The memorial match was held to raise money for Marie Curie, just as Mike would have wanted.

The weather on the day of the match was absolutely glorious and around 200 people turned up to watch the match between a YPO Tigers XI and a Rest of the World XI in the warm sunshine.

It was a game played in the right spirit and the Rest of the World XI eventually ran out 7-5 winners.

After the match, a party to celebrate Mike's life was held in the Barry Island Sports & Social Club. The event raised the staggering sum of £2,076.55 for Marie Curie and Mike's family wish to thank everyone involved in organising and everyone who turned up to support the event.

It was truly a memorable day and it is hoped to make it an annual event.
