SCHOOL sport competitions begin thick and fast at the start of the new term and cross country took centre stage at Barry Comprehensive School last week.

Initially all boys from Years 7, 8 and 9 competed in the inter-house competition, where they gain points for their house. Then it was the turn of the senior athletes in the school to compete in their own race to find the school champion.

All races were exciting to the very finish with Ashton Sparkes triumphing in Year 7, with Oliver Bradley and Brandon Phillips coming in a close second and third.

Evan Morgan won the Year 8 race with Joe Doughty and Toby Marshman-Stewart coming second and third, while in Year 9 Jack Pascoe was victorious, closely followed by Jack Blackmore and Casey Vaughan in second and third position.

Boys in Years 10 and 11 and Sixth Form also ran as preparation and competition for their GCSE PE assessments with Harry Carter, Jack Davies, Josh Hobbs, Ryan Hodge, Sam Montgomery, Jack Such and Callum Bellamy running very well.

The top finishers from each of these races then formed the representative teams which lined up for the first cross country fixture of the new season at Trelai Park on September 22.

It was a solid start to the season with plenty to build on in the next fixtures in October and November.

Well done to all involved.
