TWO late goals helped Barry Town United see off opponents Risca United at Jenner Park during the midweek.

Barry forward James Dixon had given the home side the lead in the 37th minute, his seventh in three matches since the re-opening of the ground at the end of October.

Central defender Bobby Briers then doubled the Town’s advantage, finishing clinically from the penalty spot after teammate Drew Fahiya was deemed to have been brought down unfairly.

However, persistent Risca would force themselves back into contention, hitting the post in the second half before grabbing a goal back to set up a tense final furlong.

Having enjoyed much of the possession and territory to this point, Barry suddenly found themselves on shaky ground, with the Cuckoos denied a penalty kick of their own and a host of outstretched legs failing to connect with what would likely have been the equaliser.

Nonetheless, the three points would remain in the grasp of Gavin Chesterfield’s side, with striker Jordan Cotterill sealing the victory late on with his third goal in consecutive outings and midfielder Rhys James adding a fourth in the closing moments after some fine work from Kareen Leigh.

The win saw Barry climb to fifth in Welsh League Division One, ahead of the short trip to Caerau Ely this Saturday (2pm kick-off).
