THE new golfing season finally got underway at Wenvoe Castle after exceptionally wet conditions throughout the winter months and well into the spring.

April has seen a gradual improvement in conditions and the greenstaff have to be complimented for minimising the course closures during this difficult period.

Retiring club captain Chris Jones handed over to new club captain Paul Coombs at the recent AGM and with little time to get his feet under the table the busy golf programme was in full swing.

The new Captain’s Charity day in support of Cancer Research Wales will be held on May 28, when it is hoped to raise significant funds for this worthy cause together with many other opportunities throughout the year.

April saw the first of many competitions where the winners will see their names in gold leaf on the honours board and the first to do so was Rowley Brana who lifted the Coronation Cup with an impressive five-up.

Top scores in the Welsh Team Handicap Qualifier went to Ian Francis, Peter Bayley, Paul Currie and Mike O’Driscoll. Paul Wheatley won the first Stableford competition of the year and Rhys Bagnall posted the best score in opening medal.

The Ladies Section was also very busy in April with Helen Hughes playing well to win the Ladies GUW Jan Duddridge Rose Bowl and Sheila Morrow winning the Thomson Salver.

In typical May Bank Holiday weather the rain fell heavily but couldn’t dampen the spirits of the players taking part in the mixed competition and Rob and Lynda Campbell took the honours with an impressive score in the conditions to win the Vaughan Thompson Trophy.

The club was delighted with the response to the recent membership recruitment drive and there are still opportunities to join. There a many benefits in taking out membership whether you are an experienced golfer or taking up the game for the first time.
