BARRY Romilly Bowls Club continued their fine form with four wins in all competitions during the past week.

The club and A sides both taking 10 points from their respective league games and remain unbeaten in the Munro Cup after a superb win against Dinas Powis taking the full 14 points and a good win over Penarth Windsor in the Alan Martin Cup.

Barry Romilly travelled to Senghenydd on Saturday, June 11, to play against a team promoted this season after many years in division two and three but had beaten Ferndale in their first game.

Therefore, Romilly although confident, were a shade apprehensive and expecting a difficult game. This proved the case as they found themselves 12 shots behind after the early exchanges with Graham Cogbill’s rink struggling against some brilliant bowling from the opposition rink.

The game continued with the opponents pressurising the Romilly rinks with only the rink of Alan Bryan, Roger Jones, Clive Collins and skip Jeff Wright competing well and with some excellent bowling had raced into a 14 shot lead by the tenth end.

During ends five to 10 the rink skipped by Brian Foscolo assisted by Paul Williams, Terry Bloomfield and Mel Newman were holding their own at eight apiece whilst Fred Phillips’ rink dropped 10 shots during this period to go 4 – 13 down, whilst Cogbill’s rink found themselves 15 shots behind.

The overall score after 10 ends was 36 – 45 in Senghenydd’s favour, leaving Romilly with an uphill battle against a side playing well on their own green. As the game continued the Romilly rinks fought hard to reduce the deficit and by the 15th end had reduced the oppositions lead to just a single shot.

Over the final six ends Romilly showed their true fighting qualities as all rinks dug in and managed to extricate themselves out of the mire finally scraping home by just three shots 78 – 75.

With two winning rinks Romilly had taken 10 of the 14 points which is an excellent result as on that performance Senghenydd will not lose many games at home this season. Special well done to Wright’s rink who all bowled superbly winning by 20 shots to enable the win.

On Saturday, June 18 Romilly travel to Blaenrhondda in the Carruthers Shield.
