AFTER the almost torrential conditions the previous weekend, the sunshine returned in time for what was a very busy programme of competitions over the Bank Holiday Weekend at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club.

On Friday, the popular Ladies Open attracted a large number of entries and the team format is always enjoyable allowing for the individual player to overcome the occasional wayward shot or missed putt. As usual the benefit of home advantage is recognised with special prizes for visiting teams.

The course was in fine condition which reflected the excellent scores and the winning visiting team were Brenda Tomcyck (Radyr), Carolyn McKenzie (RAF St Athan) and Cheryl Henderson with 74 points.

The runners-up and just missing out on countback were Lynda McCarthy (Kenilworth), Pam Williams (Royal Porthcawl) and Sheila Morrow also with 74 points.

The same score was posted by the winners of the prize for Wenvoe Castle members Pat Jarvis, Delyth Thomas and Nicola Sims. Runners-up were Helen Hughes, Barbara Beedham and Nicola Sims with 65 points.

Special prizes for nearest the pin were won by Carolyn McKenzie (RAF St Athan), 16ft 10in, on the second green and Sarah Chapman (Radyr), 14ft 10in, on the 15th green. Despite the high entry there was just one, two recorded and Lynda McCarthy topped up her team prizes with four dozen golf balls.

On Saturday there were more than 100 entries for the traditional Dai David Putter and Billy Harrington, playing off nine handicap, won by a considerable margin with an exceptional gross score 74 (net 65). Dennis Warren just held off Del Lewis who both recorded low scores of net 68.

Bank Holiday Monday was the scene of one of the highest entries for a Mixed Competition for several years. They were rewarded with sunny conditions and a course in great condition.

The first three places all recorded the same score of 39 points and countback worked overtime. Coming out on top and winners of the Morgan Williams Bowl were Rob and Lynda Campbell who were just ahead of Brian and Judy Green with Jeff and Lynda Hudd in third place.

Once again, twos were hard to come by with just one recorded by Joff Williams and Barbara Beedham.

Club captain Paul Coombs thanked all those who entered creating a great atmosphere for a presentation on the panoramic patio on a warm summer’s evening. Special mention was made of the work green staff had done using the new course machinery and how they were able to present the course in such a good condition over a sustained busy period.
