Barry turned in their best performance of the season so far, with a 4-0 home win over fourth-placed Newtown on Saturday.

Ben Blythe scored twice in the first half to set Barry on their way to victory, with second-half goals from Sam Snaith and Ollie Hulbert.

The result gives Barry revenge over the mid-Wales club who beat them 2-0 in the return match earlier this season.

Playing in a more direct style than usual, Ollie Hulbert twice outpaced the home defence to reach a ball over the top. On both occasions, though, visiting keeper Andy Wytcherley was able to get a hand to the shot to push it wide.

The opener came after 19 minutes. Following a throw-in on the left of the pitch, Rhys Davies struck a low cross which Blythe directed across goal into the bottom corner.

Barry nearly scored a second when Aiden Lewis capitalised on a poor clearance from Newtown ‘keeper, Wytcherley, but couldn’t get his shot on target.

The second goal came soon after, though. Jamie Veale’s corner on the right was headed in at the front post by an unmarked Blythe to give Barry a two goal lead at the break.

The points were sealed just before the hour, with Barry scoring again from a Jamie Veale corner.

This time it was Sam Snaith who rose above the defence to head into the far corner, getting Barry’s third goal of the afternoon.

Newtown tried to get a foothold back in the game, but the closest they came was an Aaron Williams shot which went off target.

Barry then scored their fourth in the 71st minute. This time Ben Blythe turned provider, splitting the Newtown defence with a pass. Hulbert ran on to score, side-footing past the keeper.

Ninth-placed Barry’s last match of Cymru Premier Phase One is away at tenth-placed Aberystwyth Town on Saturday. 5:15pm kick off.
